Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Diana Villegas studied law at the University Potificia Bolivariana Medellín, Colombia, and the University Paris II Panthéon-Assas. Subsequently, Diana Villegas worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Universities of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris II Panthéon-Assas, and Paris XIII Sorbonne Paris-Nord, among others. In 2016, she obtained her doctorate from the University Paris II Panthéon-Assas with a thesis on L’ordre juridique mafieux. Étude à partir du cas de l’organisation criminelle colombienne des années 1980 et 1990. Her thesis was honoured with the Prix Choucri Cardahi de l’Académie des sciences morales et politiques, the Prix de thèse Dalloz en droit privé as well as the Trophée “Les insolites du droit“, Cercle K2 and the Prix Giovanni Falcone. From 2016 to 2017, she worked as a researcher in the European Union's PRO-JUS justice project. Since 2017, Dr. Diana Villegas has been a researcher and lecturer (maître de conférences) in Civil and Criminal Law at the University Paris II Panthéon-Assas.

From May to October 2021 Dr. Diana Villegas has been a Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center „Law as Culture“ in Bonn.

Research project

"Contra Legem Orders. A Study on Normative Culture of Transgression“

This research aims to analyse movements and communities formed by contemporary cultural protest groups from different backgrounds. The objective is to determine how these news forms of legal ‘subcultures’ are capable of consolidating themselves as valid contra legem orders as they could produce transgressive cultural norms in the eyes of the state as part of their mechanisms of resistance and protest against state law.

The research will study the social orders that oppose the state legal order through the action of social actors, as well as through the interconnections that they establish with the state order and the normative leak reactions. The impact of these movements and communities in the social transformation of the legal system will also be an essential part of the analysis.

The research is based on a comparative approach and uses the theoretical framework of legal pluralism and the movement known as 'legal consciousness studies'. This framework will provide elements to reflect on the theory of illegal orders.
